Medtronic has filed for FDA clearance to make its MiniMed 780G insulin pump interoperable with glucose sensors developed by Abbott, a significant step in their growing partnership. The two submissions include the pump as an alternate controller enabled (ACE) device and its SmartGuard algorithm as an automated glycemic controller. If approved, this would allow Medtronic’s insulin delivery system to work with Abbott’s CGMs in an automated insulin delivery (AID) setup, offering more flexibility to patients.
This move reflects a shift in Medtronic’s strategy, as the company has traditionally only paired its pumps with its own CGMs. Meanwhile, Abbott has already partnered with other pump manufacturers like Insulet and Tandem. The companies formalized their collaboration last year, with Abbott exclusively developing sensors for Medtronic’s systems. Medtronic is also continuing work on its own CGMs, including the recently FDA-cleared Simplera Sync sensor.
